01 · Background

Who they are, where they came from

Al Green represents Texas's 9th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives, a seat he has held since January 2005. He serves on the House Committee on Financial Services. Before entering Congress, Green served as justice of the peace in Harris County, Texas from 1977 to 2004, and he is a lawyer by training. His legislative work in the House has centered on civil rights commemorations, fair lending and housing equity, and recognition of historically marginalized communities. He has sponsored annual resolutions marking National Domestic Violence Awareness Month (HRES.831, HRES.1558, HRES.846), LGBTQIA+ Pride Month (HRES.568, HRES.1332), and Black History Month (HRES.184, HRES.1040, HRES.181, HRES.1080), each drawing broad co-sponsorship across multiple Congresses. He has also sponsored legislation addressing fair lending practices (HR.1244, HR.166), housing discrimination (HR.68, HR.7053), and commemorative recognition of figures and communities connected to African American history (HRES.634, HR.4885).
