Who they are, where they came from

André Carson represents Indiana's 7th congressional district, which covers the northern four-fifths of Indianapolis including Downtown Indianapolis, and has held the seat since March 2008. A member of the Democratic Party, he became the dean of Indiana's congressional delegation following Pete Visclosky's retirement in 2021. Carson's legislative work spans consumer financial education, food access, foreign humanitarian aid, and aviation infrastructure. He has sponsored the Young Americans Financial Literacy Act in multiple Congresses (HR.2821, HR.486), legislation aimed at addressing food deserts (HR.1230, HR.484), and bills seeking to restore U.S. funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (HR.9649, HR.2411). He has also sponsored legislation to award a Congressional Gold Medal to Muhammad Ali (HR.709, HR.485) and a bill to establish a National Center for the Advancement of Aviation (HR.2879). Carson has introduced resolutions recognizing Ramadan (HRES.192), acknowledging Muslim-American Heritage Month (HRES.61), condemning violence against ethnic minorities (HRES.1025), supporting National Poppy Day (HRES.459), and has sponsored the National Amusement Park Ride Safety Act (HR.1855).
