Who they are, where they came from

Angus Stanley King Jr. is an American lawyer and politician who has served as the junior United States senator from Maine since January 2013. King is a political independent who caucuses with the Democratic Party. He previously served as the 72nd governor of Maine from 1995 to 2003. In the Senate, King sits on committees covering intelligence, armed services, and energy and natural resources, among others. His sponsored legislation spans veterans' services, rural economic development, senior health, and coastal industry support. Recent legislative activity includes bills addressing falls prevention among older adults (S.2833), preventive home visits for seniors (S.2829), and expanded wellness services for older Americans (S.2830). He has also sponsored measures related to prescription drug advertising practices (S.483), rural forestry employment (S.1336), and working waterfront tax relief (S.2538). On veterans' issues, King has sponsored the Improving Veterans' Experience Act of 2025 (S.264), the SAFE STEPS for Veterans Act of 2025 (S.668), and the Safeguarding Department of Veterans Affairs Dependent Education Benefits Act (S.2698). Additional sponsored legislation addresses rural housing conversion (S.686), fishing industry financing (S.1217), rural meat processing access (S.2409), civic education (S.2841), veterans' delivery of services (S.895), and access to the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument (S.282). King also introduced amendments SAMDT.198 and SAMDT.1773 in the 119th Congress, both of which were not agreed to by the Senate on voice votes.
