Who they are, where they came from

Bonnie Watson Coleman represents New Jersey's 12th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives, a seat she has held since January 2015. She is the first African-American woman to represent New Jersey in the U.S. House of Representatives. Prior to her election to Congress, she served in the New Jersey General Assembly from 1998 to 2015, representing the 15th legislative district. In the House, Watson Coleman has sponsored legislation addressing water infrastructure access (HR.1729, HR.3376), equitable mental health research and services (HR.3548, HR.5976, HR.2904), and protections against hair discrimination (HR.1638, HR.8191). She has also sponsored measures related to public accommodations (HR.7005), maternal health (HR.6242), federal employment policy (HR.7566), voter registration (HR.8130), and exposure to extreme heat (HR.4817, HR.4212). On final passage of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2024, she voted against the measure (HR.2670), a vote that placed her in the minority of her party.
