Clarence Thomas has served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States since October 23, 1991. President George H. W. Bush nominated him to succeed Thurgood Marshall. Thomas is the second African American to serve on the Court, after Marshall, and has been its longest-serving justice since Anthony Kennedy's retirement in 2018.
