Who they are, where they came from

Derek Schmidt represents Kansas's 2nd congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives, having taken office on January 3, 2025. A lawyer by training, Schmidt previously served as Kansas Attorney General from 2011 to 2023, winning that office by defeating incumbent Democrat Stephen Six. Before his tenure as attorney general, Schmidt served in the Kansas Senate, representing the 15th district from 2001 to 2011, where he held the positions of Agriculture Committee chairman and Senate majority leader. He sponsored H.R.7752, the Kelsey Smith Act, during his time in the House.
