Who they are, where they came from
Diana DeGette serves as the U.S. Representative for Colorado's 1st congressional district, a Denver-based seat she has held since January 1997. She is a lawyer by training and a member of the Democratic Party. DeGette served as chief deputy whip from 2005 to 2019 and has been the dean of Colorado's congressional delegation since 2007. Before her election to Congress, she served in the Colorado state legislature as state representative for the 6th district from 1993 to 1997. In Congress, her sponsored legislation has addressed firearm magazine restrictions (H.R.1674, H.R.625), environmental regulation of hydraulic fracturing (H.R.6082), cumulative pollution enforcement (H.R.2995), diabetes research and prevention programs (H.R.5461, H.R.1523), and healthcare workforce access (H.R.5621).
