Who they are, where they came from

Gary C. Peters serves as the senior United States Senator from Michigan, a seat he has held since January 2015. A member of the Democratic Party, Peters previously represented Michigan's 14th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2009 to 2015, a district that encompassed the eastern half of Detroit, the Grosse Pointes, Hamtramck, Southfield, and Pontiac. He is also a lawyer and former naval officer. In the Senate, Peters has sponsored a range of enacted legislation spanning government operations, Great Lakes conservation, transportation safety, homeland security, and military family policy. His enacted bills include the Federal Agency Performance Act of 2024 (S.709), which addresses federal agency accountability, and the Financial Management Risk Reduction Act (S.4716). On Great Lakes issues, he sponsored the Great Lakes Fishery Research Reauthorization Act (S.2878). In the area of transportation, he sponsored the Strengthening the Commercial Driver's License Information System Act (S.3475). His military-related work includes the Keeping Military Families Together Act of 2024 (S.2181) and the CADETS Act (S.467). He also sponsored the DHS Joint Task Forces Reauthorization Act of 2024 (S.4698), the IMPACTT Human Trafficking Act (S.670), the Improving Federal Building Security Act of 2024 (S.3613), the Disaster Assistance Deadlines Alignment Act (S.1858), and the Congressional Budget Office Data Access Act (S.1549). Additional sponsored legislation currently in committee includes the Satellite Cybersecurity Act of 2025 (S.3404), the RAPID Reserve Act (S.2062), the Lifelong Learning Act (S.3870), and the SWAT Act of 2026 (S.3810).
