01 · Background

Who they are, where they came from

Gus Michael Bilirakis is an American lawyer and politician representing Florida's 12th congressional district, a seat he has held since 2013. He first entered Congress in January 2007, succeeding his father, Michael Bilirakis, in representing Florida's 9th congressional district until redistricting reshaped his seat. His district covers much of the northern portion of the Tampa Bay area. Before his congressional service, Bilirakis served as a Florida state representative for the 48th district from 1998 to 2006. In the 118th and 119th Congresses, his legislative work has spanned Medicare and Medicaid policy, veterans' benefits, health research reauthorization, and broadband access. He sponsored H.R.2365, a national plan to address Parkinson's disease that was enacted into law, and H.R.7189, a reauthorization of federal congenital heart disease research programs, which also became law. He sponsored H.R.2102, the Major Richard Star Act, which attracted more than 200 cosponsors and addresses concurrent receipt of retirement and disability benefits for combat-injured veterans. On appropriations votes, he voted against final passage of H.R.2670, H.R.9747, and H.R.2872, each of which became law, in each case voting against the majority of his party.
