Who they are, where they came from
Hillary Scholten serves as the U.S. Representative for Michigan's 3rd congressional district, a seat she has held since January 3, 2023. She is the first woman and first Democrat to represent the district since Howard Wolpe left office in 1993, and the first Democrat to represent Grand Rapids in Congress since Richard Vander Veen departed in 1977. The district, based in Grand Rapids and the urban core of West Michigan, was previously represented by former President Gerald Ford. Before entering Congress, Scholten worked as an attorney for the Department of Justice and in private practice.
