01 · Background

Who they are, where they came from

Jared F. Golden represents Maine's 2nd congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives, a seat he has held since January 3, 2019. The district spans the northern four-fifths of Maine — the largest congressional district east of the Mississippi River — and includes the cities of Lewiston, Bangor, Auburn, and the state capital of Augusta. Golden is a Democrat and a Marine Corps veteran. The district was carried by Donald Trump in both the 2020 and 2024 presidential elections; Golden won his seat concurrently in both cycles, making it a politically competitive area. In the House, Golden has sponsored legislation focused on the timber and logging industries of his district, including the Loggers Economic Assistance and Relief Act (H.R.4665) and the Future in Logging Careers Act (H.R.1193), as well as a bill to designate the Maine Forest and Logging Museum in Bradley, Maine as a national site (H.R.2258). He has also sponsored the Northeast Fisheries Heritage Protection Act of 2025 (H.R.674), addressing the commercial fishing industry, and H.R.505, which would impose additional duties on imports into the United States. On the House floor, Golden voted in favor of the Building Chips in America Act (S.2228), which became law, and voted yes on H.J.Res.27, H.J.Res.30, H.J.Res.39, and H.J.Res.45 — congressional disapproval resolutions under the Congressional Review Act. He also voted in favor of the Transnational Criminal Organization Illicit Spotter Prevention and Elimination Act (H.R.3602) and the No Foreign Election Interference Act (H.R.8314). Each of these floor votes was recorded against the majority position of his party.
