01 · Background

Who they are, where they came from

James E. Clyburn represents South Carolina's 6th congressional district, a seat he has held since January 1993 and is currently serving his 17th term. The district encompasses most of the majority-Black precincts in and around Columbia and Charleston, majority-Black areas outside Beaufort, and nearly all of South Carolina's share of the Black Belt. Since Joe Cunningham's departure in 2021, Clyburn has been the sole Democrat in South Carolina's congressional delegation and has served as dean of that delegation since 2011, following fellow Democrat John Spratt's loss of his seat. Clyburn was first elected in 1992. In the 119th Congress, he has sponsored legislation on background checks for firearm purchases (H.R.3868) and voting access (H.R.8078).
