John G. Roberts Jr. serves as the 17th Chief Justice of the United States, a position he has held since September 29, 2005. He was nominated by President George W. Bush and confirmed by the Senate to lead the Supreme Court of the United States. As Chief Justice, Roberts presides over the Court's oral arguments and conferences, authors opinions, and administers the judicial oath to incoming presidents and vice presidents. He has authored key opinions during his tenure on the Court. Before his elevation to Chief Justice, Roberts built a career as an appellate attorney and federal judge. He served as a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit prior to his Supreme Court appointment. Roberts received his undergraduate degree from Harvard College and his law degree from Harvard Law School.
