01 · Background

Who they are, where they came from

Jon Ossoff has served as the senior United States Senator from Georgia since January 20, 2021, representing the Democratic Party. He is the youngest incumbent U.S. senator. Before his election to the Senate, he worked as a documentary and investigative filmmaker. In the Senate, Ossoff has sponsored legislation spanning veterans' services, federal lands, government ethics, and civil rights commemoration. He sponsored the Rural Veterans Transportation to Care Act (S.784), which would address transportation barriers for rural veterans seeking medical care, and the Improving SCRA Benefit Utilization Act of 2025 (S.1550), directed at strengthening servicemembers' access to legal protections. On government ethics, he sponsored the Ban Congressional Stock Trading Act (S.1879), which would restrict stock trading by members of Congress. He also sponsored the Ocmulgee Mounds National Park and Preserve Establishment Act (S.1131), which would establish a national park and preserve at the Ocmulgee Mounds site in Georgia, and the Ralph David Abernathy, Sr., National Historic Site Act (S.2102), which would designate a national historic site honoring the civil rights leader. Ossoff introduced amendments during the 118th and 119th Congresses, including SAMDT.1255 and SAMDT.3350, both agreed to by voice vote or unanimous consent, and SAMDT.2971, agreed to by voice vote.
