Joni Ernst has served as the junior United States Senator from Iowa since January 6, 2015, and is a member of the Republican Party. She is also a retired military officer. In the Senate, Ernst has sponsored legislation spanning government oversight, federal spending, agricultural policy, immigration enforcement, and women's health. She authored the Small Business Innovation and Economic Security Act, which was enacted into law (S.3971). Her government accountability work includes bills that would restrict federal employee relocation benefits (S.23), require disclosure of certain federal spending (S.872), eliminate public financing for presidential campaigns (S.538), and mandate audits of the Internal Revenue Service (S.1427). On immigration, she has sponsored Sarah's Law (S.84), which would require detention of undocumented individuals charged with certain crimes against U.S. citizens.
