Who they are, where they came from
Joseph D. Morelle represents New York's 25th congressional district, a seat he has held since November 2018. He was elected to fill the vacancy created by the death of longtime Representative Louise Slaughter. Before entering Congress, Morelle served in the New York State Assembly, where he represented the 136th Assembly district, covering eastern Rochester and the Monroe County suburbs of Irondequoit and Brighton. In January 2013, Speaker Sheldon Silver appointed him majority leader of the New York State Assembly, and he served as acting speaker in the Speaker's absence. In Congress, Morelle has sponsored legislation spanning constitutional amendments, public health, agriculture, consumer rights, criminal justice, and education.
