Who they are, where they came from

LaMonica McIver represents New Jersey's 10th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives, a seat she has held since September 18, 2024. She was elected in a special election held in September 2024 to succeed Donald Payne Jr., who died in office in April 2024. Prior to her election to Congress, McIver served on the Newark municipal council from 2018 to 2024, where she built her career in local government. In the 119th Congress, McIver has sponsored H.R.1835, the MERIT Act, which advanced through committee and drew between 100 and 199 cosponsors.
