Who they are, where they came from

Lateefah Simon represents California's 12th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives, having taken office on January 3, 2025. She is the first member of Congress known to be born legally blind in both eyes, and the first Muslim member of Congress from California and from outside the Midwestern United States. Simon is a member of the Democratic Party.
