01 · Background

Who they are, where they came from

Mark Pocan represents Wisconsin's 2nd congressional district, based in Madison, and has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since January 2013. A member of the Democratic Party, he serves as co-chair of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus and chair emeritus of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. Before his election to Congress, Pocan served in the Wisconsin State Assembly from 1999 to 2013, representing the 78th district. He succeeded Tammy Baldwin in the State Assembly and later succeeded her in the House when Baldwin was elected to the U.S. Senate. Pocan is also a businessman. His legislative work includes sponsoring the Tyler Clementi Higher Education Anti-Harassment Act (HR.5486, HR.5685), legislation related to social insurance programs (HR.1950, HR.7803), and measures addressing military service records (HR.6470).
