Who they are, where they came from

Melanie Ann Stansbury represents New Mexico's 1st congressional district, which includes the majority of Albuquerque and most of its suburbs, and has held the seat since June 2021. A Democrat, she previously served as a member of the New Mexico House of Representatives for the 28th district from 2019 to 2021 and worked as an ecology instructor prior to entering elected office. In Congress, Stansbury has sponsored legislation addressing public lands protection, including two versions of the America's Red Rock Wilderness Act (HR.2467, HR.3031), and has introduced measures related to railroad safety (HR.5871), tribal water access (HR.635), and Indigenous health services (HR.3670). Her sponsored bills also include proposals on public health nursing (HR.6989), postsecondary student outcomes (HR.7811), federal judicial ethics enforcement (HR.1811), and broadband connectivity through rural grant programs (HR.6070). Additional sponsored legislation covers land preservation near Albuquerque (HR.2893), climate and disaster resilience funding (HR.5983), veterans' benefits (HR.5982), and pesticide oversight (HR.1100). She has also introduced a concurrent resolution calling on the Senate to exercise its advice and consent authority on treaty ratification (HCONRES.34).
