01 · Background

Who they are, where they came from

Mike Simpson represents Idaho's 2nd congressional district, a seat he has held since January 1999. The district encompasses much of eastern Idaho, including Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Twin Falls, Sun Valley, and the northern two-thirds of Boise. Simpson was first elected to public office in 1984 and won his House seat in the 1998 elections, succeeding Mike Crapo. Before coming to Congress, he served in the Idaho state legislature and as Speaker of the Idaho House of Representatives from 1992 to 1998. In the current Congress, Simpson has sponsored legislation to reorganize the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals (H.R.634) and to authorize an additional federal judgeship for the District of Idaho (H.R.319), as well as a bill addressing urban canal infrastructure (H.R.6279).
