Who they are, where they came from

Nicholas J. Begich III represents Alaska's at-large congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives, having taken office on January 3, 2025. He is a member of the Republican Party. Begich comes from a prominent Alaska political family; his grandfather, Nicholas Joseph Begich Sr., served in the Alaska state senate and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Alaska in 1970 as a Democrat before being presumed to have died in a 1972 plane crash in Alaska. In the 119th Congress, Begich has sponsored enacted legislation addressing Alaska Native land and trust issues, including measures restoring municipal lands to Alaska Native villages (H.R.43), extending land allotment eligibility for Alaska Native Vietnam-era veterans (H.R.410), and expanding Alaska Native Settlement Trust eligibility (H.R.42). He has also sponsored enacted joint resolutions of congressional disapproval (H.J.RES.106, H.J.RES.131).
