Who they are, where they came from
Nydia M. Velázquez represents New York's 7th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives, a seat she has held since 2013. She previously represented New York's 12th congressional district from 1993 to 2013, prior to redistricting, making her one of the longest-serving members of New York's congressional delegation. She is the first Puerto Rican woman to serve in the United States Congress. She chaired the Congressional Hispanic Caucus from 2009 to 2011. Her sponsored legislation in the current Congress includes bills addressing Puerto Rico's disaster recovery and federal reporting requirements (HR.596, HR.5501, HR.5503), housing landlord accountability (HR.206), airline consumer protections (HR.5502), small business research and innovation programs (HR.3169), and hair texture anti-discrimination measures (HR.4539).
