Patty Murray is the senior United States Senator from Washington, a seat she has held since January 1993. A member of the Democratic Party, she previously served in the Washington State Senate from 1989 to 1993. Murray was Washington's first female U.S. Senator and served as president pro tempore of the Senate from 2023 to 2025, becoming the first woman in American history to hold that position and the youngest senator to occupy the office of president pro tempore in more than five decades. Her legislative record spans workplace equity, child care, veterans' services, public health, and environmental protection.
