01 · Background

Who they are, where they came from

Rashida Tlaib serves as the U.S. Representative for Michigan's 12th congressional district, a seat she has held since January 2019. She is the first Palestinian American woman to serve in Congress and one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress. A lawyer by training, Tlaib represents a district centered on Detroit. In the 118th and 119th Congresses she has introduced legislation spanning economic policy, child poverty, housing, veterans' health care, firearms storage, criminal justice, and arts compensation. She sponsored the Stop Price Gouging in Grocery Stores Act of 2025 (HR.4966), which would address pricing practices in the grocery sector, and the End Child Poverty Act (HR.6235), which would restructure federal benefits to reduce child poverty. She also sponsored the Safe Storage Saves Lives Act (HR.4152), addressing residential firearms storage requirements, and the Justice for All Act of 2025 (HR.1354), relating to criminal justice. On defense and foreign policy, she sponsored H.J.Res.85, a joint resolution expressing congressional disapproval of a proposed foreign military sale, and the Stop Politicians Profiting from War Act of 2025 (HR.1756). On final passage of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2024, she voted against the measure (HR.2670), a vote cast against the majority of her party.
