01 · Background

Who they are, where they came from

Sanford D. Bishop Jr. is a lawyer and politician serving as the U.S. representative for Georgia's 2nd congressional district, a position he has held since January 1993. His district encompasses southwestern Georgia, including Albany, Thomasville, and portions of Columbus and Macon. Following the death of Representative John Lewis, Bishop became the dean of Georgia's congressional delegation. He is a member of the Blue Dog Coalition. In the 118th Congress, Bishop sponsored the Protecting Our Produce Act (HR.7762), addressing agricultural food safety, and the Heirs Education and Investment to Resolve Succession of Property Act (HR.7761), which relates to heir property rights. He also sponsored the President Jimmy Carter Congressional Gold Medal Act (HR.1369) and the Disabled Veterans Tax Termination Act (HR.333), the latter aimed at adjusting tax treatment for disabled veterans' benefits. Bishop voted in favor of the Building Chips in America Act of 2023 (S.2228), which became law, and voted yes on a joint resolution of congressional disapproval (HJRES.27); both votes were cast against the majority position of his party.
