Who they are, where they came from

Steve Daines serves as the senior United States Senator from Montana, a seat he has held since January 2015. He is the first Republican Class II senator from Montana in 102 years. Before his Senate tenure, Daines represented Montana's at-large congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2013 to 2015. In the Senate, Daines has sponsored legislation spanning public lands and outdoor recreation (S.1547, S.704, S.3527), federal tax policy (S.213, S.45), telehealth access (S.3834, S.763), veterans' care (S.3285, S.1912), and tribal affairs (S.239). He sponsored a constitutional amendment on balanced budgets (SJRES.58) and a bill tying congressional pay to budget passage (S.45). His sponsored legislation addressing abortion policy on college campuses (S.207) and Down syndrome protections (S.205), alongside a concurrent resolution on the Geneva Consensus Declaration (SCONRES.4), reflect a recurring focus on reproductive policy. Education policy legislation includes the A PLUS Act (S.309), which addresses state flexibility in federal education funding.
