Who they are, where they came from

Trent Kelly represents Mississippi's 1st congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives, a seat he has held since June 2015. A member of the Republican Party, Kelly is a retired major general from the Mississippi National Guard and a lawyer by training. Before his election to Congress, he served as the district attorney of Mississippi's 1st Judicial District from 2012 to 2015. In the House, Kelly has sponsored legislation addressing maritime industry workforce and shipbuilding capacity (HR.3151), agricultural income stabilization for farmers (HR.10045), agricultural education at community colleges (HR.5468), and forest conservation programs (HR.3476). He has also sponsored measures related to Coast Guard readiness (HR.3397), food security conservation funding (HR.622), and trade normalization with Uzbekistan (HR.2329). Kelly voted against several continuing appropriations measures that became law, including the Continuing Appropriations Act, 2024 (HR.5860), the Further Continuing Appropriations and Other Extensions Act, 2024 (HR.6363), an additional fiscal year 2024 continuing resolution (HR.2872), the Extension of Continuing Appropriations and Other Matters Act, 2024 (HR.7463), and the Continuing Appropriations and Extensions Act, 2025 (HR.9747), in each instance voting against the majority of his party. He also voted against the Stop Institutional Child Abuse Act (S.1351) and the Billie Jean King Congressional Gold Medal Act (S.2861), both of which became law.
